The Foundation and the First Meeting The foundation for the Turkish Society for the History of Medicine is based on the llth International History of Medicine Congress held in Yugoslavia, in 1938. Assistant Prof. Dr. A. Süheyl Ünver attended that congress as a national representative, and he was charged with founding a History of Medicine Society in Turkey. With the offer of Dr. Süheyl Ünver, Dr. Besim Ömer Akalın, Dr. Akil Muhtar Özden, Dr. Osman Şevki Uludağ, Dr. Feridun Nafiz Uzluk, Dr. Saim Erkun, Dr. Ruscuklu Hakkı Üzel, Dr. Metine Belger and Dr. Fuat Kamil Beksan were accepted as members of the association and the Turkish Committee was formed. in the same meeting, the symbol of the snake circling the world three times was drawn by Dr. Süheyl Ünver and this symbol was accepted as the seal and badge of the Turkish Society for the History of Medicine. When Dr. Süheyl Ünver came back to his hometown, he called the International Society for the History of Medicine's Turkish committee to a meeting and Prof. Dr. Besim Ömer Akalın was elected as chairman at the first meeting held on October 6, 1938. in that meeting the founder of the International society, Dr. Tricot Royer and the director, Prof. Dr. Fomoiu were given honorary memberships (Figure 1).

The executive committee started the prepara-tion of the society's regulations. The fîrst name of these regulations was the "Rules and Regulations of the Turkish Society for the History of Medi-cine." These regulations were prepared by Dr. Feridun Nafiz Uzluk in 1938. After they were appraised by the founding members, on January 7, 1939, they were given to the Governor of the Province and in 1940 became effective. Figure 1. The center of the society was the "Istanbul University Medical History Institution" in 1940 and 1952. In 1973, it became the Istanbul University Cerrahpaşa Medical History and Deontology Institute. In 1984, the institute was in Room A-431 in Istanbul University, Cerrahpaşa Medical Faculty and Studies of Medical History. For the fırst time the Society for the History of Medicine was located in a room and a sign was hung on the door. The society has continued its studies and activities from this center since 1984. |

Members of Turkish society are those who have research and publications on medical history. For this reason among its members are physicians, pharmacists, veterinarians, psychologists, archeologists, Turkologists, sociologists, historians and philosophers from different branches. At present there are 142 members.
The General Committee of the Turkish Society for the History of Medicine had usually been held before a year but with the changes in regulations, it will be held before every two years.
